Frequently Asked Questions

When might I need a patient advocate?

You may benefit from the expertise of an advocate in the following situations:

1- Medical crisis: When a family is plunged into an unexpected health emergency and wants to know options for care.
2- Medical mystery: When people face chronic or rare problems and have not had a satisfactory diagnosis or treatment.
3- Aging parents: Especially when family members are far away and can’t be there to understand what is happening medically with a relative
4- Medical research: To pursue medical trials for new treatment options if traditional approaches have failed.
5- Second opinions: It is easy to know what to do if the second and third opinions you receive are the same. But what if they differ? How do you decide which is correct?

Also, you may be told that you should not hesitate to ask questions—but sometimes you don’t know what questions to ask. We can find out for you the important questions to ask–by researching an illness and by talking with our colleagues who can refer us to experts in the field. We then share that research with you—in language that’s understandable.

Can LHA provide medical advice or treatment?

No. We do not replace your regular physicians. We do not examine, diagnose or treat medical conditions. We do not prescribe medications. While we may accompany you to an appointment, we will serve mostly as an interpreter. You will remain under your doctor’s care.

How much does it cost? Will insurance pay for these services?

We bill at an hourly rate. We do not take insurance, so our services will never impact your deductible, copay or any other aspect of your insurance coverage.

What age group does LHA provide support for?

We offer our services to clients of all ages.

What geographical areas does LHA service?

We offer our services to clients across the country (and on a case-by-case basis, to clients overseas).
